My Dr prescribed Ibuprofen 600 mg every 4 hrs ….
You can get 200mg over the counter and use what your Dr tells you. It acts as a pain reliever and anti-inflamitory and may get you through healing.

So, I joined a running class about a month ago, and I have been doing good keeping up with the faster group in the class. But about a week ago I began to feel a pain in my side. I thought it was the usual side cramp, but now whenever I start to run it hurts in the same spot and lingers even while walking afterwards. I think it may be a tear, as stretching it causes more pain and clenching relieves it. Its consistancy is worrying me.

Thinking that my yearlong mystery pain was finally solved, he told me to load up on water and prescribed me some pain meds and also to try and break down the stone. One thing that he said which deflated my good mood was that he was adamant that the stone in my kidney could not be the cause of the pain.

Why am I still having pain where my wisdom tooth used to be?

I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out on July 25th. Do the math and that’s been about a month. I had two dry sockets on both my bottom sockets. They healed and I was completely fine until about a couple days ago when my lower right “hole” started aching.

It feels a lot like a toothache. I’ve been using the syringe almost after every meal, etc. Could it be a dry socket returning or an infection? What could cause pain nearly a month after the surgery?

Andrew answers:

Sometimes nerves are damaged and this could result in what is called “phantom pain”. Also, sometimes the jaw bones are bruised or damaged when wisdom teeth are taken out and that results in lingering pain.

Your dentist can check it out at your next visit, but you should not be having an infection if you did all the rinsing, etc. You were instructed to do.

It should pass soon.

You sure can, it may be that your implanting right now, which is often described as brief crampy or localized back pain, however you could also have a ectopic pregnancy.
Is it normal to have lower back pains when your 10 weeks pregnant?

Well lately I have lost a bit of the nausea but now my lower back is killing me. I feel so old now. Is it normal to already have lower back pains. My pains are usually more towards my right side. Is there any way to help it?

Andrew answers:

Yes. As the pregnancy progresses, your body creates hormones that will soften the ligaments in your pelvis, so when it’s time, the baby can get through. (This can also loosen the ligaments in your feet–a friend of mine gained a whole shoe size when she had her baby. Her size 7.5 foot is now almost a 9… So don’t buy any expensive shoes!)

You might want to check with a chiropractor or osteopath to see if your pelvis is level. An MD probably won’t know how to deal with this.

Yoga is good, too – try to find a teacher who’s worked with pregnant women. I’m suggesting a teacher instead of a DVD because if you haven’t done yoga before, it really makes a difference to have a coach who knows what she’s doing.

A heating pad will help, too… Just don’t leave it on for more than 20 minutes at a time and don’t sleep on it.

Good luck!

Andrew answers:

First touch the area, if sore to the touch, might be your kidney, low back, side of spine, get to a doctor FAST.

Otherwise thru activity or sleep position, your back is out. I go to chiropractors for this kind of pain.
When the back is not in alignment, off to the side, twisted, it stretches and twists the Muscle surrounding the back, spine.= spasm.
The nerves are in the muscle and they are screaming pain, warning, something not right here, owwww.

Putting the spine back, lessens the stretch, twist, muscle spasms, and calms the nerve.
Problem after issue is resolved, swelling has to go down. This could take 6-8 weeks maximum to lessen pain, if you get the back adjusted and righted.
Then if back was going out all along before reached level of pain, muscle used to holding has been in wrong position, stretched out.
Muscle will have to be retrained and strengthened to hold correct position, so generally needs more adjustments, do overs for a while.
I went thur this for 15 years, finally off all meds, just use over the counter meds if I can’t get to choiropractor.

Also, get a good, new bed. You need support there. Sometimes just getting a new bed, puts back in stronger support position, and back can get itself back into position.
Although I love after effects of chiro, I feel straight, tall, my nerves are working at maximum capacity, my body rejuvenates when I sleep.

Bed is a biggie though, you spend how many hours a day there? ALOT.
Do not let some one who is not a chiro adjust you, they will scr*w you up big time. Check and make sure you are not herniated, ask chiro if he has xray machine, mine does, you should be x-rayed before he touches you in case you have some difference, abnormality from birth.

Kidney is very big concern though. Check with doctor to be sure, best to treat kidney infection, save kidney, than risk dialysis.

Why is my back pain resulting in a headache?

I was having lower back problems for a couple of months now. My back was sprained or something like that and the muscles became hard (the chiropractor compared them to concrete). So I was going to the chiropractor regularly and I began stretching multiple times a day. My lower back pain is going but now my upper back (shoulder blade area) is very stiff. I have not been to the chiropractor since because the upper back pain is more bearable. Since my upper back pain has started, I have had a headache for a few days now. It is not constant but more so starts when i first physically get up in the morning, or when i bend over to pick something up off the floor. It is only on the right side of my head like behind my ear and a little towards the back but it can get more intense than a normal headache. Anyone have a reason why this could be happening?

Recommendations for best insoles for reducing heel impact pain due to exercise? Please?

I’m very overweight and trying to work to lose it. I have a treadmill but due to my size, the repeated workouts is giving me noticeable heel pain due to the heel strikes on the treadmill. I cannot currently afford to buy a gym membership, a new piece of low-impact equipment or even a really nice pair of high-tech shoes (like shox or 360s). I don’t want to overdo and get my feet in such awful shape that I cannot continue the exercise. Please respond with suggestions for the thickest or best insoles or heelcups that might help me reduce the pain/injury factor. Thanks so much.
I don’t think its plantar fascitis…YET. Hoping to be proactive and avoid the problem if I can. I *think* that if I can find something really effective to cushion the impact until I lose some of the weight and/or can afford to buy a decent elliptical then I can continue with my goal of attaining a tolerable weight without too much foot pain. Thank you for your reply.

Andrew answers:

Are you sure your heel pain isnt plantar fasciaitis? Caused by the muscle being pulled away from the bones of your foot by a stronger calf muscle.

I am a 250 lb guy who had significant heel / arch pain. I went to a foot doctor who made orthotics. They cost me $300 dollars but the results are phenomenal. No pain within days of wearing them in all shoes.

After exercise, how do you get rid of the calf muscle pain?

and is the pain actually a good sign? should i just keep on running through the pain barrier?

Andrew answers:

After excercise? Stretch. How do you mean “keep running through the pain barrier”? Your question says “after” you excercise….a bit confused!

Stretch your calves as so:
1. Stand on a step, one foot flat on the step(left) , the other (right) with the heal over the edge.
Keep the tight leg straight, and bend the left leg so you fall forward- therefor stretching the back calf.
Hold for atleast 30 seconds- the optimal time for streching is 2 minutes- every time you feel the strech subside, pull your right heel down further, bend the knee on your left leg (keeping the left foot flat on the floor all the time).
Swap legs.

2. With your back heel still over the edge of the step, and the front leg flat on the floor, bend the back knee- but here is the tricky part- make very sure that your heel does not go upwards- this will give a slight pull lower down on your calf and will help prevent shinsplints.

3. Stand on one leg, bend the other leg, knees touching, hold the bent leg-heel to your bottom, lean into the stretch, this will help your quads.

4. Place one foot flat on the ground (left).
Place the right foot infront of you about hip length away.
Both legs straight, back straight, lean forward-if you want you can bend the back leg. You should feel the stretch at the back of your front leg.
Change sides and repeat.

5.
Stand with both feet together- if you have trouble balancing, take the heels a tiny bit apart so your balancing on three points: each heel and the toes.
Keep your legs straight and back straight and fal foward as if you are going to touch the floor- this should stretch the back of your legs. Do not worry if you cannot touch the ground- and be aware it is easy to overstretch your hamstrings this way- so if you feel to much tension, bend your knees or do not press your hands as close to the floor.

6.
Sit on the floor, back against a wall, place your knees pointing outwards and your feet touching- with the soles of your feet touching, your out side of knees as close to the floor as you can, keep your back straight.
If you feel this is not enough, lean your back forwards- keeping your back straight and the soles of your feet touching thoughout- try to also keep your knees as close to the ground also.
This will help the hip flexors.

7.
Stretch all the way upwards, feet pointed/on the toes, and stretch your arms above your head, hold for 30 seconds, release and bring your hands down, bend your knees, then repeat, stretch upwards again, legs straight, arms straight and above your head, breathe in, hold, release.

If you have any repetative injuries, rest the area by not doing any excercise to make it worse for atleast a week, then go back again slowly to what you were doing. At the first sign of pain, hold of again- this time for 2 weeks.
If the pain continues- see a doctor, they can refer you for a scan to make sure if it is not serious.

How do I alleviate pain concentrated in the rib area? Could it have developed from my sleeping/exercise habits?

Is it possible I have a bad mattress, a bad sleeping position, or that I stretch too much before my daily runs? Maybe I have a third rib haha. This pain probably comes and goes maybe once a month or so, nothing serious, I’m just wondering if you guys know how this could happen. I don’t think I need pain pills, icy/hot patch or anything. Thanks for any advice.

Andrew answers:

Is is like a feeling that a something is stuck between your ribs that when you breathe, it is kind of painful and you need to stay steady and calm breathing, so that it will not hurt?

If it is, it is most likely that you just had a pinched rib or something like that. It is like a dislocation but not really. If the pain is in your right rib, what you need to do is raise your right arm and try to touch your right shoulder, not necessarily touch it but make sure your right side is stretched and extended. While you are in this position, deep calm breathes. It might or might not hurt, but that is because your ribs are arranging to its proper position, but the pain will subside.

Do you know for sure that you ovulated on that certain day? Because ovulation can actually cause cramping and pains. It’s possible you are either ovulating or maybe ovulated sooner than you thought and it’s implantation.
Andrew answers:

There’s no such thing as a ‘slipped disc’….don’t worry!

If you’re in relatively good health this is – I believe – most likely a pulled muscle or you’ve janged a nerve. Traumatised nerves can be problematic (got the t-shirt), so you might want to call NHS Direct 0845 46 47 for a chat with someone medically-trained, to work out what to do for the best.

Physio is available on the NHS. Acupuncture too (some GPs administer it, so no waiting necessary.)

Possibly though all you need is some ibuprofen to reduce inflammation (and pain). But do get doctor’s guidance!

Get well soon.

Anbesol works pretty good. You can buy that in super market, CVS, RiteAid, Walgreens. It numbs it for a while and brings some relief. Also, clove oil. But, do not swallow a drop of it, it burns. Or, just get a tiny bottle of whiskey from the liquor store. Hold the whiskey on the tooth as long as you can, then spit out. Along with using either one of those things, take a few Advil or Ibuprofren. I hope you feel better.

I had an EKG, chest x-rays and complete blood work, but the doctor does not believe I have any life threatening condition. I was given Motrin for 1 week when the nurse thought my condition may be muscular-skeletal, but the sensations are still present.

I do not smoke, drink and jog on a regular basis. I am also a vegetarian and do not take drugs. I take vitamins, as well as garlic supplements and St. John’s wort on a daily basis.

I’ve had lower back pain for 2 years but the doc does not feel this is related.

Any advice? Thank you.

Andrew answers:

Well, you’ve done all the right things to care for yourself. It could be a muscle spasm. Perhaps are you pinching a nerve when you bend and put pressure on your neck or shoulder area and the related muscle spasms.

Be sure to continue checking this out though and also continue getting the EKG’s. You might approach your doctor about getting an exercise stress test to see how your heart responds to stress. Chest pain does not manifest like the textbooks say especially in women (I know you’re a man!!). It can appear as indigestion, pain between the shoulders, in the upper back or jaw or just plain old fatigue. Some people don’t even get symptoms of heart problems. So your ongoing check with your doctor is really important.

I hope you feel better soon!!

I don’t know about a permanent fix, but I’d ask a doctor about it. You could have a disk that’s pinching some nerves there. In the mean time to relieve some of the tension and make it feel better, a good technique to try is to get a tennis ball and lay on it, with it between your shoulders..( on the floor is best), bend your knees a bit, and roll around on the tennis ball. Sounds odd, but it works like a charm! Good Luck.

If your knee is hurting in a closed chain position, you need to attempt open chain to strengthen it;; don’t keep on the elliptical until you’ve resolved the pain;; another thing you can try is to change the position JUST SLIGHTLY, to get it into an area that does not cause pain..so toeing in or toeing out..again slightly…just 1/2 an inch or so..but then ya need to get your knee checked as to what exactly is causing the problem before it gets worse..good luck!!

Andrew answers:

I can sympathise with this, I had lower back pain for a couple of years, went to a chiropracter, the doctor and nothing worked.

What I found was that it was because I had stopped exercising and spent alot of time sitting around in front of a computer (my first job after graduation).

So I would thoroughly reccommend swimming and yoga. Both really good for a sore back and really low intensity. You should only go easily at first though but do it regularly.

Once you have a bit of movement in there then move onto core strengthening exercises, i.e. Crunches and lower back strengthening exercises. If you have a strong core muscle group it helps with your posture and reduces back pain.

Now I exercise almost everyday and have no back issues at all.

If it isnt a problem with your back and is actually your liver or kidneys or something (I guess a constant pain instead of the odd twinge when you move?) then go to a doctor now – it could be something serious and may get much worse.

Andrew answers:

In a situation like this, it’s human nature for a responder to want to play amateur doctor and say, “This worked for me, so it’s guaranteed to work for you.” Unfortunately, the people who make those well-intended recommendations will not be around to help you if you injure your back or knees. It’s great that you recognize the need for both diet and exercise. Since you’re dealing with some pain, talk to a doctor or physical therapist in order to put together an exercise program that will work well for you without the risk of further injury. This is important for a few reasons:

(1) You may need some diagnostic tests to determine whether you just have aches and pains or something more serious like tendinitis in your knees or an extruded disk in your back.

(2) The professionals have spent years studying human physiology, and they understand that not all sore backs or sore knees indicate the same conditions.

(3) It would be a good idea to get a second opinion on your diet. You appear to understand the common sense part of it; however, if you’re consuming too few calories in a day or missing out on one of the major food groups, you’re setting yourself up for a bounce-back or some possible health problems.

Best of success in your efforts, and remember that this forum works great for some types of questions, but others should be left to the professionals.

Can a Sinus Infection cause these pains?

Can a sinus infection cause pain in the back upper right part of your mouth? And also give you ear aches and a sensation like it needs to pop but it can’t? And finally can it cause really bad head aches? I’m experiencing all three of these but there only on the right side of my head. My back two teeth are really aching, my ear aches, and today it feels like I have a migrane all day today.

Andrew answers:

Sinusitis can cause pain in your upper teeth, along with ear aches and other pains throughout the sinus areas. A primary symptom would be thick yellowish or greenish mucus drainage from the front and back of the nose. If there is mucus backed up inside the Eustachian tubes, this can cause a build-up of fluids in the ear that can become infected if they cannot drain, which will ultimately lead to middle ear infection. The Valsalva manuever (popping ears by pinching nostrils shut and breathing) would not be a recommended move if there is fluid build-up as this could push an infection deeper into the ear canal. If swallowing, yawning or gum chewing doesn’t relieve pressure in the ear, you should try a decongestant like Sudafed. Headaches are also common with sinus infection. Pain in the head or sinuses that becomes worse when lying down would also be symptomatic of infection.

If you love to much and it causes pain than that is not love right?

Andrew answers:

It is impossible to control how much you feel love but it is not impossible to control what you do about it. If it is bad love, regardless of feelings, you have to have the sense to move on.

It is easy to say and difficult to do, admittedly, but I have been there and done that so I know it works. In my case, I moved on when I discovered that it hurts too much when we have one thing in common: We were both madly in love with her.

You know what? Good love not only doesn’t hurt as much as bad love but it has long-term rewards such as it still exists long after all the love-sick fools have drowned their sorrows in booze, random affairs, drugs for imaginary illnesses and a lifetime of frustration for fear that if they try something different, it won’t hurt so good.

I have always believed that we find the love we are used to seeing as a child. Parents whose relationship is healthy and who teach their child what commitment really means are more likely to produce children who handle the vicissitudes of the love wars.

Pain in forearm appears to be associated with the supinator?

3 months ago a family member hurt her right forearm while lifting and positioning a heavy toddler. The pain is extensive enough that it keeps her from performing normal daily activities, even as small as using a computer mouse, and causes pain while typing. During isometric contractions, the sharpest pain comes in association with supination of her right hand. Though she has been to a chiropractor, the pain has steadily grown worse. I suppose going to a PT would be the next step.. any thoughts/recommendations?
Hey- thanks for the reply. She indicates a pretty specific area on her forearm, and mentioned the chiropractor had told her the “super something” was the muscle at the location of the pain, so I asked her to perform a few applicable movements and tell me which ones insighted the problem, and if it was more or less intense with any of the movements. She clearly identified that turning her palm in a clockwise direction was where the pain came into play, so that’s why it all seems to add up to the supinator. But obviously I’m not a practitioner.

Andrew answers:

It depends. Some chiropractors extensively use ice, electrotherapy, and muscle work (e.g. Strengthening exercises, stretching, etc) in their practice, so if her chiropractor is already doing this, then PT won’t offer much more. Also, if she’s performing repetitive elbow actions (i.e. Forceful pushing and pulling, bending of the wrist, gripping, and pinching), then her problem can get worse. No matter who she sees for treatment, she needs to modify her work site or her duties, and yes that includes less use of the computer mouse. This is crucial for treatment to be successful. She also needs to take frequent breaks as she works, as well as limiting heavy pushing, pulling, and grasping.

Sometimes a lightweight plastic arm splint is recommended during sleep. This would limit her elbow movements at night and eases further irritation. So, she may want to ask her doctor about this.

That being said, how do you know that it’s actually a supinator problem? Was that the “official” diagnosis, or are you guessing? I’m asking because there are several conditions that can cause pain in that area, and the supinator may or may not be involved. E.g. Tennis elbow, radial tunnel syndrome

And of course, conservative treatment may have limitations. In some cases, surgery may be the best treatment option. It is generally considered a last resort.

How do you expect god to stop pain and suffering?

If you get angry with someone and hit them or say something harsh or cause some destruction – how can god stop that?

You are causing pain and suffering to the other person. Do you expect god to materialize and hold your mouth? Then you will complain that you have no free will.

Similarly, if humans keep multiplying in times of abundance such that the consumption causes scarcity and starvation – how do you expect god to stop that? Then you will accuse god of interfering with your free will of having as many children as you like.

Andrew answers:

The problem isn’t with God’s power and it’s not with God’s love, it’s with our faith and the false ideas of man that we apply to Him rather than seek to know Him as He is.

People who reject His existence but then also blame Him for what’s wrong and claim that is the basis for their rejection have zero credibility and are their own worst enemies. They suffer under illogical circular reasoning that they choose to turn a blind eye to while mocking people that have faith for the same.

I can’t go to the chiropractor anymore bc i lost health insurance. My pain is mainly at night & yes I plan on getting a new mattress in just a few weeks.
Most common cause of back pain is piriformis syndrome. It’s a body disorder. Just stretch, relax the muscle & remove the pain. I also had the same & used this app to remove pains through exercises. To help you, I’m going to paste these here.

You can try epsom salts, but I doubt it would do much for you if ibuprofen and tylenol aren’t doing anything. A hot epsom bath seems wise unless you have narcotics lying around. If so, help yourself.

A certain herbal substance of varying legality is known to be effective too. I cannot personally vouch, though, being a male.

Kava and kratom are supplements that you can look into for future purposes. Kava relaxes the lower body; kratom is basically like vicodin, but it can constipate you so be careful.

Andrew answers:

You need to see a doctor if you have constant stomach pain. There are a number of stomach and intestinal problems that could cause continual pain and you need to figure out what is going on. You could have a serious health condition or you could have something as simple as a food allergy. In some cases, just changing your diet can make a huge difference in how you feel, but you need to get tested to find out what the problem is first.

Please help me find an answer!! What would cause a distended gallbladder WITHOUT gallstones?

Ive had upper abdominal pain for a very long time now, almost a year. After some testing my doctor found I had a moderately distended gallbladder but NO gallstones would be found. when i find the cause for a distended gallbladder, it only tells me that stones blocking ducts cause the distention to happen but since I don’t have stones, what else could cause a distended gallbladder??? Anyone have any kind of answer for me? It would be greatly appreciated!

Andrew answers:

They could have simply missed the stones or they could be farther down the biliary tract. You could also have biliary dyskinesia where the gallbladder does not contract like it should to release bile.

Edit: If her gallbladder was not producing enough bile, she would be having greasy, pale stools because she would not be emulsifying fats properly. The gallbladder does not get inflamed from lack of bile. If gets inflamed when bile stagnates and irritates the lining of the gall bladder either because the gall bladder is not contracting or the biliary ducts are blocked.

Nose: How will water reduce gallbladder inflammation, remove any stones, or cause the gallbladder to contract normally? How will an herb for that matter do these things? Medicine requires a plausible mechanism if a definite one is not known and evidence of efficacy.

Mr E.: You are a danger to patients everywhere recommending spinal manipulation for conditions that require medical attention sooner rather than later. You delay treatment and endanger lives. One day your advice will get someone killed.

How do I know if I have a weak core?

People think I have a weak core because of back pain when I exercise. What is a weak core? How do I make it stronger?

Andrew answers:

Ashley, your core muscles are the 4 muscles of your abs and the spinal muscles of your low back.
The deep muscle that runs side to side called the transverse abdominus muscle is the deepest of the 4 ab muscles. It can have a tremendous effect on body posture. You cannot touch this muscle from the outside. It wraps around the torso, creating an effect similar to a back support belt. I mention this muscle because people tend to forget about training it. To try it just suck your belly button down toward your spine and hold the muscle contraction. This SHOULD be your first move when doing any ab exercise, it will tighten your abs and make your waist appear smaller.
You also have the internal and external obliques, and the one that everyone wants to see in the front the rectus abdominis. They all work together for good posture and to stabilize the spine during exercise.

When you have strong core muscles they hold your spine in place when you exercise, when you do not your spine moves more and takes more of the load onto the skeleton, this can cause injury.

Your back pain when you exercise may be due to muscle strain – a mild injury to the muscles that are not able to do there job. My bet is Muscle imbalance – Your abs are stronger than the muscle of your back, pulling you forward and placing extra load onto your spine.

Many people do crunches to work abs, but never think to stretch the abs after, or work the muscles of the low back to balance this effect.

Try lying face down on the floor and raising your shoulder and feet up at the same time (keep legs straight), how long can you hold it? Less than 10 seconds and your low back muscles are weak. How high can you raise your chin?

Pain in lower left abdomen in females is more common than pain in lower left abdomen in men.
The “ovaries” and the “tubes” as well as the womb are located in the abdominal area.

Therefore, pain in lower left abdomen(i.e. Above the left leg, lower left side) in women,
